Handheld broadcast spreaders are significantly smaller than their push alternatives and come with a comfortable strap to carry over the shoulder. The working principle implies twisting a small trigger to let fertilizer drop out from a container and get through gaps in the underside. These broadcast spreaders are adjustable for drop rate and come ideally for fertilizing particular plants or seeding bare patches.

Push broadcast spreaders have larger containers with almost the same dispenser mechanism. However, such a cart has a mechanical spinner at the bottom of its bin and pneumatic wheels fixed to a frame with handlebars. Many carts are provided with on/off plunger locks to ensure complete opening and closing.
